Gel Those Nails Up! Kritika Ponia June 17, 2011 Beauty Gone are the days when you had to sit for hours wondering which nail color to choose in the beauty salon for your manicure and pedicure. Today with the advent of the gel technology, you have numerous nail enhancement techniques at your disposal. With these techniques and options, even the once impossible stuff can literally be at your fingertips. Dishwashing spoils your nails now, does it? Oh, not anymore! Gel technology takes care of that easily. You must be thinking it’ll wear off soon. Oh, no! Even after a fortnight, your nails will be fresh. Wondrous, isn’t it? That’s technology for you. Well, the problem we started with actually remains put. In more ways than one, it actually strengthens more. There are so many different options in gel today. You can’t just walk into a beauty salon and say, “gel.” Gel can mean a lot of things. This is why you need to be very specific. Specificity in this case can be very tricky and challenging. Now, there are things you need to keep in mind while choosing the right gel for you. Gel nails that are best for you might not be the best for someone else. Gel nails are not universal. While choosing your gel nails, you should base your choice on two things – your personal sense of style and how committed you are going to be to your look. You may want it to be neutral that lasts very long or stifled that can be changed so that nail color is an accessory for you. Coming to a conclusion is not enough. You need to make sure that you were very clear with your desires and choices and that you are getting exactly what you asked for at the salon. You might want to check your budget before entering the salon because gels are expensive and application takes quite some time. If you are ready to shell out time and money, then you don’t need to look back. Just as a precaution though, it’d be ideal to take a look at the cost before signing up for it. Lastly, here are a few things you must be very careful about. If you choose the Traditional Clear and French Gel, make sure your technician is not rushing through the process. Doing it too quickly will only spoil the look of your nails. If you choose OPI Axxium Gel, make sure your technician doesn’t make you dip your fingers in acetone in order to soak off the Axxium. This can really damage your nails. The better way is to first file the nails and balls of cotton dipped in acetone one each nail and then wrap them in foil to keep the cotton in place. After this, if you simply place your hands in the dryer for 10 minutes, it’ll be sufficient. You’d want to try out the Harmony Gelish system since it is the most inexpensive among all gel techniques. Make sure you don’t confuse it with Shellac which is another technique that is a hybrid between gel and polish. Gelish also stays on for longer apparently and so this might be your right choice.
