Sometimes, sleep plays hide and seek with you. No matter how much you try, you fail to fall asleep. It gets ridiculous when you are dog-tired and exhausted to your very last fiber and you still can’t sleep. Generally, you will be advised to pop in sleeping pills at such times. But not all of us like that idea. What you can do thus is alter our eating habits. There are certain foods that counter sleep and render you awake. By making sure you don’t consume them during your sleep time, you will make a big difference. We all know caffeine and chocolate are sleep inhibitors. You must keep these at bay during night time.

Here are a few foods that can help in your favour though. Here are some sleep-inducing foods:

 Turkey: Turkey is a rich source of tryptophan. This amino acid has properties that can promote good and restful sleep. Tryptophan does not induce sleep directly. It enhances the production of serotonin in the brain which is necessary for sleep.

 Mashed Potatoes: Potatoes may be dissed by health conscious people saying they are high on carbs but they are not. Potatoes and sweet potatoes don’t perk up the blood glucose levels. Instead, they will help in eliminating certain acids that work to block tryptophan. You can have mashed potatoes with buttermilk or low fat milk.

 Bananas: Bananas are natural sleep inducers. They have both tryptophan and melatonin. Both of these are essential for deep sleep. Bananas are also high in magnesium which is a stress buster.

 Milk: Warm milk induces sleep because it has tryptophan. This is the reason why young kids are given warm milk before they go to sleep.

 Oatmeal: Oatmeal is rich in fiber. This property makes you feel satisfied and it also has melatonin. You can have a bowl of milk and oatmeal to sleep well.
